Our story

It started with our own dog

Our 10 year old Boston terrier is fussy and a real foodie, but his allergies got the better of him. He was overweight, losing his hair, his skin was dry and flaky and his back legs were weak. We tried raw, then other proteins. Nothing helped.

So we started cooking for him ourselves, with ostrich as the main ingredient. It was the best decision we could have made. Three years on, he barely needs the vet and keeps up with our toddlers.

We wanted to share the Pantry Pup experience with other dogs who have the same struggles. Our meals are cooked in small batches and frozen the same day. We hope they make a difference to your pup's life too.

Questions

Good to know

Why ostrich?

A 2016 review of published studies looked at 297 dogs with confirmed food allergies. The most common triggers were beef (34%), dairy (17%), chicken (15%) and wheat (13%). Our recipe contains none of these.

Ostrich is a novel protein for most dogs, meaning they have not eaten it before. That is why vets often use an unfamiliar protein when looking for a food a sensitive dog can tolerate. Ostrich is also lean: the mince we use has 21.4g protein and 2.7g fat per 100g.

How do I switch my dog over?

Phase Pantry Pup in over 7 to 10 days so your dog's tummy can adjust.

Days 1 to 3: a quarter Pantry Pup, three quarters old food.
Days 4 to 6: half and half.
Days 7 to 9: three quarters Pantry Pup.
From day 10: Pantry Pup only.

Can I use it as a topper?

Pantry Pup is made to be your dog's whole meal, not a topper. Mix it with the old food only while you phase it in. Once the switch is done, feed Pantry Pup on its own. Other food in the bowl can bring back the ingredients your dog reacts to, and our feeding guide portions are for Pantry Pup alone.

Does my dog need supplements?

We recommend a daily canine multivitamin and an omega oil such as Efazol alongside our food. Ask us if you are not sure what to use.

Where do you deliver?

R40 to Waterfall and surrounds, and R80 elsewhere in Johannesburg. Outside Johannesburg, send us a message and we'll quote you.

Storage and thawing instructions

Keep packs frozen until you need them. Thaw one pack overnight in the fridge and use it within 3 days. Do not refreeze.

Forgot to take one out? Place the sealed pack in a bowl of cold water and it will thaw in about 30 minutes. Use it straight away, or keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Do not microwave or use hot water, because the heat kills the probiotics.
